A photographic exhibition by William Debois from 30 Sept – 26 Oct 2017 proudly supported by the Regional Arts development Fund (RADF) and the Gladstone Region Council. The project started as a way for the artist to document and process the experiences of dealing with depression .
The images were captured using a mobile phone camera, and present a sincere and revealing glimpse into the everyday, the mundane and gut wrenching moments, captured through the “filter” of depression.
A permanent web gallery supports the exhibition and create opportunity for members of the public to contribute to the project with text, quotes, images or videos that depict their own experience, perception and understanding of mental illness. Submissions can be made by visiting
One of the rules I imposed myself for The Sea I Swim In was that all images taken for the project had to be kept. There were too many to exhibit, so I planned a book, with captions and additional text. My high school buddy Nicolas Vesin turned the idea into a beautiful object. It’s everything I wanted it to be, and completes the project in many ways.
